Most people using VMs don’t actually understand what they’re running.

They think it’s just another app.

It’s not. It’s a whole computer… pretending to exist inside your computer.

What’s really happening under the hood

A virtual machine is not magic. It’s isolation + resource slicing.

You’ve got your real machine CPU, RAM, disk. Then a layer called a hypervisor comes in and says:

this chunk of CPU → goes to VM
this chunk of RAM → also VM
disk → fake disk file

Now inside that VM, you boot a completely separate OS. It thinks it owns everything.

It doesn’t.

It’s sharing. Always.

That’s why your 16GB machine suddenly feels like garbage when you give 8GB to a VM. You basically cut your system in half.

Why it feels slower (and sometimes weirdly fast)

People love saying modern VMs are near native speed.

Yeah… for some things.

CPU-heavy tasks? Fine.
Disk IO? Not always.
Graphics? Depends, and usually messy.

Because every operation goes through an extra layer.

Instead of: app → OS → hardware

You get: app → guest OS → hypervisor → host OS → hardware

That extra hop adds overhead. Sometimes small, sometimes painful.

I’ve had builds that were fine on host, then inside a VM suddenly everything stalls like it’s thinking about life.

The part nobody explains properly

There are two types of virtualization behavior that actually matter:

Full virtualization Everything is emulated. Safe, isolated, slower.

Paravirtualization Guest OS is aware it’s virtualized and cooperates with the host. Faster, less overhead.

Modern setups mix both.

WSL2? That’s basically a lightweight VM with tight integration. Which is why it feels fast compared to old-school VMs.

But spin up something like VirtualBox with default settings and yeah… you’ll feel the difference instantly.

When you should actually use a VM

Not for flex. Not because some tutorial said so.

Use it when you need isolation or environment control:

  • testing sketchy code without nuking your system
  • running another OS for compatibility
  • replicating production environments
  • sandboxing builds or servers

If you just need Linux tools on Windows, a full VM is overkill. Use WSL instead.

I made that mistake early on. Ran full Ubuntu VM just to use apt.

Completely unnecessary.

Setting one up without shooting yourself

Pick your tool:

  • VirtualBox → easy, slower
  • VMware → better performance
  • Hyper-V → native on Windows, but quirky

Create VM, assign resources carefully.

Do NOT max everything out.

Giving a VM all your RAM doesn’t make it faster. It just starves your host and everything starts choking.

Balance matters:

  • leave at least 40–50% RAM for host
  • don’t assign all CPU cores
  • use SSD-backed storage or you’ll regret it

And install guest tools. Always.

Skipping that is why your VM feels like it’s running on a potato.

Edge cases devs actually hit

Networking is where things get annoying.

Bridged vs NAT sounds simple until your local server stops being accessible and you waste 2 hours debugging nothing.

Also file sharing:

  • shared folders can be slow
  • syncing between host and VM can introduce weird bugs

If performance matters, keep your project inside the VM, not bouncing between both.

The real takeaway

A VM is just controlled resource theft with a UI.

You’re carving your machine into pieces and pretending each piece is independent.

It works. It’s powerful. But it’s never free.

If your workflow feels slow, it’s not because your code sucks.

It’s probably because you stacked too many layers between you and the hardware.
